Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has laid a foundation stone for the construction of new terminal building at Gannavaram Airport in Vijayawada on October 19, built at an estimated worth of Rs.150 crore.
Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Union Urban development and Parliamentary affairs Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu, Central Science and Technology Minister, YS Chowdary are among who visited the foundation ceremony.
This new terminal being designed with a steel and glass structure which have all modern facilities such as baggage handling system, inclined arrival baggage claim carousels, central air-conditioning, public address system, fire alarm system, flight information display system, CCTV for surveillance, check-in-counters, car parking etc.
The Airport Authority of India have said that present terminal have the capacity of just 5,000 passengers per month, but the terminal which is being developed will have the capacity to handle 500 passengers per hours, 250 departure and 250 arriving. The building will be spread over 9,520 sq.m. and located on a 540-acre site.
“With the new terminal coming up, more traffic will be expected for the airport. The airport needs 700 acres for expansion, which will have a modern runway to facilitate all kinds of aircraft,” Raju said.
As the new Capital city of Amaravati being developed it is expected to very quickly add the traffic flow. The government is hoping to upgrade the connectivity from Vijayawada and Amaravati to the airport.
The airport construction work is expected to be completed within 15 months in war footing basis as the state government is planned to shift from Hyderabad to Amaravathi.
