The post office founded on 1st October 1854 by Lord Dalhousie, who introduced the new Indian postal services. Now the Indian postal office is ruled by the Government of India. The headquarters of Post office is in Sansad Marg, New Delhi. The annual revenue of the post office is 11,496.18 crore.

India has divided into 23 postal circles and each circle handled by the Chief Postmaster general. Each circle divided into regions, known as divisions. In Hikkim, Himachal Pradesh there is the highest post office in the world, which has the height of 14,567ft.

Except for Gazetted holidays, the post offices remain open on Saturday too. In some cases like if the government announced a holiday for one day, the post office closed for that day.
