Indian Badminton stars Saina and Srikanth are turning out to create history at World Championships with some spectacular performances. It is the first time ever that India will be having two players in top five – Saina Nehwal (World No.2 Women’s singles champion), Srikanth (World No.3 in Men’s single championship) turning out to be as the biggest contingent at World Championships.
P.V. Sindhu won bronze medal for India twice during 2013 and 2014, Women’s double pair Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa have won much awaited medal for India after 28 years at 2011 World Championships. This famous duo who fetched many medals for India will also be playing prestigious tournament at Gelora Bung karno Stadium. Olympics bronze medal winner Saina Nehwal has not entered beyond quarter finals for five times in a row, Srikanth is playing in his second Badminton World Championship.
Saina is favored with a bye in the first round therefore she will be playing in second round directly, winner from Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi and Kati Tolmoff of Estonia will be played against Saina in the next round.
Saina Nehwal has won Syed Modi GPG and Indian Super Series. She will be competing against 14th seed Sayaka Takahashi in Pre-quarterfinals. After which she has to really fight hard against China’s sixth seed Wang Yihan.
Saina Nehwal said,”The draw is really tough with Sayaka Takahashi and Wang Yihan both in my half. They are very strong players, so let’s see how it will be for me in this tournament. I hope I do well this time.My training was good. Gopi Sir was happy with the way I was playing, so that’s a good thing. I believe that I am playing my best badminton. It’s all about implementing it on court. Let’s see how I play.”
Men’s singles champion, Srikanth has already won Swiss Open and India Super Series titles and is all set to face Australia’s Michael Fariman in first round.
