Sania Mirza Nominated For Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

Indian Tennis champion ‘Sania Mirza’ might be granted with prominent ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna’ for the year 2014-15. Though her performance at Wimbledon with unwed Grand Slam women’s doubles title along with Martina Hingis will not be considered. Her performance at various event has excelled her to propel towards this prestigious title. This award will be issued with may discussions that will be headed by ‘Kapil Dev’ and Michael ‘Ferreira.’

Krishna Poonia made an open revolt in 2013 when rifle shooter Ronjan Sodhi was recommended. Last year the award was not granted to anyone. On Friday, Sports Ministry made a decision to submit Sania’s name to the committee of awards. Soon the panel will meet to decide the list of awardees. Sania won ‘Arjuna Award’ in 2004 and ‘Padma Shri’ in 2006. At 2014 Incheon Asian Games she earned bronze in women’s doubles with Prarthana Thombare and gold in mixed doubles with Saketh Myneni. Last year she won US Open mixed doubles title with Bruno Soares.

The decision has been taken by ministry, after ‘All India Tennis Association’ (AITA) crossing the deadline to send their applications with over two months. According to guidelines the last day for the receipt to nominate was 30th April which was last working day of April. A source from ministry said that by nominating Sania it doesn’t mean that should might get the award, it all depends on the decision of committee members. On behalf Tennis federation, the ministry is allowing the delay to forward her application to committee.

Under section 5.3 of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award Scheme, ministry nominated Sania and the rule says,

“The government reserves the right to nominate up to two sports persons in deserving cases where no such nominations have been received from the agencies mentioned under the Scheme.”
