Karva Chauth Story and History

During the past years, there was a city named Indraprasthapur. There a Brahmin named Vedasharma led a happy life and got married to Leelavati. They both had seven sons and one daughter who is deaf. Their daughter name is Veeravati. As days moves, they became more prominent, and all got married. As Veeravati is the one daughter, her parents pamper her and also all the brothers.

On Karva Chauth Veeravati along with her Sister In-Laws, she performed Karva Chauth Puja. As she is weak, she got fainted in the middle of the puja. By seeing her in that situation, her brothers felt bad. So one of her brothers climbed the tree by catching a lamp. Then, when Veeravati came out conscious, they told that the moon has come and you can break the fast and have something — so believing that she broke her fasting in the middle.

After some time, her husband came home dead. By seeing her husband, she felt awful, and she says that she is the reason for his death. So on listening to her mourning Lord Indra and his wife Indrani came to console her. Veeravati asked them to make his husband alive. So they told that she has to perform this puja for the whole year including Karva Chauth. Then they said that her husband would be alive. So Veeravati did fasting for the entire year and got her husband live. It is the history and story behind Karva Chauth.
