Recently The Reserve Bank of India had ordered all the banks to turn their Debit/ATM cards into the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) based cards.
As being the largest bank of India, it has requested all the account holders who have the old Magstripe based cards to replace with the new EMV chip-based cards. The SBI bank has provided this facility through an online portal for account holders who have the access of Net Banking or reach your branch office and apply for the new EMV ATM cards.

The RBI has introduced this EMV based cards for the security and privacy of the account holders. The new EMV based cards are a chip-based which has high data encryption and storage technology than the old magnetic stripe cards. When you make a transaction with this card the data is stored dynamically in the chip and impossible to clone or carry fraud activities. This provides more security to your cash in the accounts.
How To Check Whether The Card Is EMV Based
As per the order by the SBI bank, all the account holders should change their cards. So, before that user has to know whether the card is EMV based or magstripe based card. If you can see a chip on the center-left side of the Debit card according to the SBI then it is an EMV chip based. You need to have a few details handy to apply for the EMV based cards and they are
- Net banking account
- Login ID and Password
- Email Address and mobile number
- Internet connection
Apply New EMV Based ATM Cards Online
The SBI has given the online facility to change your old debit cards to a new EMV based ATM cards. Those steps are clearly disscussed below.
- Open the online portal of SBI in your browser.
- Give your User ID and password and login into your account.
- Go the eServices tab on the above of the window and click on it.
- Click on the ‘ATM card Services’ and select Request ATM/Debit card option.
- Select savings account from the options appeared on the screen.
- Select the type of the ATM card you want from the drop menu.
- Click on the submit tab and log out you will receive a notification message.
- The new EMV based ATM card will be sent t your address through the mail within 7 working days.
Apply New EMV Based ATM Cards Offline
You need to have a Net Banking account to apply for new ATM cards through online. If you don’t have an account in the online portal then, go to the branch office of your bank and give the details in the application and submit. The ATM card will be delivered to you within seven working days of the SBI bank.
